1 Devanha Gardens

Ferryhill, Aberdeen

This development of 11 luxury apartments within the Ferryhill area of Aberdeen comprises the refurbishment and conversion of an existing 19th century villa, which was formerly Devanha Gardens nursing home, into 4 flats and the construction of a new build extension with glazed ‘link’ comprising 7 flats.

The client’s brief was to create large apartments for open market sale with generous living room/ kitchen areas, and to have en-suite bathrooms on master bedrooms. Utility room areas were to be provided where possible to keep the washing machine out of the main living room. Three of the flats in the existing building are on 2 levels.

All the modern additions were removed from the existing villa building and the area of ground closest to Polmuir Road, which previously housed a large single storey dining area, became landscaped garden space.

The new build extension is constructed over 4 levels on the footprint of a previous 2 storey and basement bedroom block extension and houses a basement car-park that links in with the basement level of the villa building. The design of the extension building takes cues from the massing of the adjacent townhouses to the right but with modern detailing in the design of the zinc clad dormers and entrance and the clipped eaves, glass balustrading and projecting bays. The masonry parts of the extension building are wholly finished in granite to respect the conservation area status of the area.

In a change to the original brief, the building is currently being operated by Apple apartments as serviced apartments and has been fitted out to a very high standard internally.
